Winston Churchill
5/13/1940
Try to imagine that statement being made as part of the very first speech to Congress by a modern American President. ANY speech to anyone at any time, for that matter. Frankly, the only thing I can remember in my lifetime is Gerald Ford’s 1975 State of the Union address where he said, “…the state of the union is not good.”
Maybe we as Americans have never had to face up to a situation as dire as Britain’s in 1940 when the Nazis appeared invincible.
“”I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.””
Ok, so I don’t get it — What is your point?
I’m suggesting that Winston Churchill, as the brand new British Prime Minister in 1940, had to deal with an enormously tougher, uglier situation than any modern U.S. President. The very existence of the British empire hung in the balance …literally. Call me cynical, but in my lifetime it seems like presidents have been more focused on establishing a legacy as “great,” than in actually tackling – successfully tackling – truly difficult issues.
Bottom line, I’m suggesting a lot more humility and lot more production of results is in order.
““I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.””
So, are you suggesting the current sitting president is offering blood, toil, tears and sweet as more jobs and opportunities are being made available in America and no one really wants to really get down to the basics of every day toil and therefore America may slide into the socialist / communist atsmophere that is being produced, or actually get out and work hard and support the efforts of this sitting president..
